Description
MISOPHONIA literally means “hatred of sound.” But people dealing with this recently named condition don’t actually hate sounds – they have a knee-jerk, fight or flight reaction to certain specific sounds that their neurological systems seem to be interpreting as danger.
As the word “misophonia” began appearing in more places, several therapists and others started offering services to these clients. Depending on their knowledge and training, they may or may not have provided useful assistance. Some of their clients later contacted Dr. Jaelline Jaffe, suffering not only from misophonia, but now also “treatment trauma.”
When Dr. Jaffe began working with this population, she was one of very few psychotherapists involved, as misophonia was initially seen as an audiological disorder. Over more than a decade working with patients who are struggling with misophonia, she has developed a Multidimensional Protocol to assist with this complex neurological condition. It has become her passion to train licensed therapists to understand and provide appropriate treatment for these patients across the country and abroad.
This Training Manual is a step in that direction. It is intended for licensed and experienced mental health practitioners. It is designed to make it as useful as possible for the therapist. Pages lie flat, so the scripts, which appear in italics, can easily be utilized. For optimal results, it is recommended that the structure and sequence of exercises be followed. Consultation is available.
